How We Map the World's Birds: What Billions of Records Can (and Can't) Tell You
A single map shows two billion bird sightings at once — so what does all that data actually tell you?
Point a map at every bird sighting humanity has ever bothered to write down and share, and something remarkable appears: the shape of the living world, drawn by millions of hands over centuries. The Global Bird Map does exactly that — more than two billion records, glowing brightest where the most have been logged. But a map this powerful is also easy to misread, so it's worth understanding what those glowing cells really are.
Where the records come from
Every bright patch on the map traces back to an occurrence record: a single documented instance of a bird being found somewhere, at some time. That might be a checklist a birdwatcher submitted after a morning walk, a photograph with a location attached, a sound recording, or a specimen catalogued in a natural-history museum a century ago.
On their own, these records are scattered and inconsistent. Their power comes from being pooled. The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is the international infrastructure that gathers occurrence records from thousands of institutions, government surveys and citizen-science platforms, standardises them, and publishes them openly for anyone to use. When you look at the Global Bird Map, you're looking at GBIF's holdings for a species — or for every bird at once — rendered as a heat surface over the dark globe.
What the map shows — and what it doesn't
Here is the crucial distinction. The map shows where a bird has been recorded. It does not show:
- Range — the area where a species actually lives. A range map is an expert's judgement that fills in the space between sightings; an occurrence map leaves the gaps empty.
- Abundance — how many birds there are. A hundred records could be a hundred people photographing the same famous individual, or a hundred separate flocks.
- Live position or migration — the map is a pooled, all-time snapshot. Even for a champion migrant, it shows the total footprint of sightings, never a moving front, a flight path, or a bird's location right now.
That's why the map carries no "LIVE" badge and never draws migration arrows. It's a map of evidence, and it's honest about being one.
The bias baked into every biodiversity map
The most important thing to internalise is this: the map follows observers, not just birds.
A cell glows brightly for two reasons that the map can't tell apart — either there are many birds there, or there are many people looking. Regions with large birdwatching communities, deep museum collections and open-data cultures contribute overwhelmingly more records. So a well-birded country blazes while an equally bird-rich but under-surveyed region stays dim, not because the birds are absent but because the records are.
This is called observer bias or sampling effort, and it shapes every occurrence map ever made. It doesn't make the data wrong — a record is a genuine trace of a bird's presence — but it means a dark patch is ambiguous. It might mean "few birds." It might just mean "few people looking." Read the map with that ambiguity in mind and it becomes a rich, honest picture. Read it as a census and you'll be misled.
Why we only use openly-licensed records
The Global Bird Map counts and maps only records that GBIF publishes under CC0 (public domain) or CC-BY (free to reuse with credit) — the openly-reusable subset. Records under more restrictive, non-commercial licences are deliberately left out. That keeps the map free to build on, but it also means every total you see is a floor, not the complete GBIF holding: the real number of records is higher. We attribute GBIF on every surface, as the CC-BY licence requires.
With all of that in mind, the map is an invitation, not a verdict. Open the map for the Barn Swallow and watch it wrap the northern hemisphere; open it for a rare crane and see how thin the evidence can be for a bird on the edge. Each one is a portrait of what we've noticed — and, quietly, of where we've been looking.

Why do some countries glow so much brighter than others?
Because the map follows people as much as birds. Countries with large numbers of active birdwatchers, strong museum traditions and open-data policies contribute vastly more records — so the United States, the United Kingdom and the Nordic countries light up intensely, while equally bird-rich regions with fewer observers stay dim. This is called observer bias or sampling effort, and it's the single most important thing to keep in mind when reading any biodiversity map.
Does the map show birds migrating?
No. Even for long-distance migrants like the Arctic Tern or Barn Swallow, the map is a pooled, all-time snapshot of every recorded sighting — not a moving front, a flight path or a live position. It shows the full footprint of where a species has ever been logged, which for a migrant can span continents, but it never animates the journey or claims a bird is somewhere right now. There is no LIVE badge; every figure carries the date its snapshot was taken.
