How to Turn a Live Map Into a Shareable Clip (And What the Clips Actually Show)
A map that moves tells a story a still can't — so how do you capture that motion and share it?
A still map is a snapshot: this is the world at one instant. But some of the most interesting things about the planet are not instants at all — they are motions. Night does not sit still; it sweeps around the globe once a day. The Space Station does not hover; it circles the Earth roughly every hour and a half, tracing a long looping wave across the map. You cannot show either of those with a single picture. You need the picture to move.
A motion clip does exactly that. It takes one thing that changes over time and animates it on a map, then loops — so you can watch a whole day of daylight and darkness pass across the continents in a few seconds, or follow one lap of the ISS from the tropics up past the edges of its orbit and back down. And once it is moving on your screen, you can save it: as a looping GIF that plays anywhere, or as a single still frame.
It's a rendering, and it says so
The most important thing to understand about these clips is what they are — and are not. A clip is not a live video feed, and it does not pretend to be. What you are watching is a rendering: a clean, schematic map of the world, with a graticule of latitude and longitude lines, a handful of labelled cities for orientation, and the moving thing drawn on top in the console-green and charge-blue of the rest of the site. The frame itself carries a small caption saying as much.
What is real is the motion. The day/night line is not decorative — it is computed from the actual position of the Sun for the current time. The ISS path is not a sketch — it is the Station's real orbit, worked out from its published orbital data. So the shape is true and the timing is true; you are just seeing them as a drawing rather than a satellite photograph. That honesty is deliberate: a beautiful rendering that is clear about being a rendering is worth more than a fake that implies it is a live camera.
Where the numbers come from
Two very different bits of real data drive the two clips.
The day/night sweep is built from the Sun's sub-solar point — the single spot on Earth where the Sun is directly overhead at any moment. From that point, and the geometry of a sphere lit from one side, you can work out where it is day, where it is night, and where the soft band of twilight sits in between. The astronomy behind that point has been checked against NASA's JPL Horizons system and lands within about a kilometre of the true position, so the terminator you see falls where it really falls.
The ISS orbit is built from two-line elements — a compact, standard description of a satellite's orbit that CelesTrak publishes for the Space Station and thousands of other objects. Fed through SGP4, the standard model every tracker uses, those elements give the Station's position at any instant, and stringing those positions together draws the familiar ground-track: a wave that leans east to west because the Earth turns underneath the orbit while the Station goes around.
Neither source costs anything or needs a key, which is part of why the whole feature is free to use as much as you like.
Nothing leaves your device
There is one more quietly important detail: making a clip uploads nothing. The frames are drawn in your browser, and they are stitched together into a GIF right there on your own machine. No frames are sent anywhere, no server does any work, and no account is needed. That is why you can render as many clips as you want without a cost creeping in — the same principle that keeps the rest of the site free.
Why a GIF
When the whole point is to share something, the format matters. A GIF is the most universal moving image there is: it plays in a tweet, in a text, in a chat window, in a forum post, with no player and no controls and no risk that a phone will refuse the format. That is why the clip exports as a looping GIF rather than a video file. And if you only want a frozen moment — the terminator crossing your city, the ISS over an ocean — you can save a single frame as a PNG instead.
Every clip, whether GIF or still, carries the wordmark and the web address burned into the corner. So wherever it ends up, it quietly points back to the map it came from — which is rather the point.
