SKY Β· STARGAZING CONDITIONS
Is Tonight Good for Stargazing?
A clear, dark, Moonless sky is the whole game. This layer reads tonight's cloud cover for your location, weighs in the Moon, and gives you an honest verdict β so you know whether it's worth heading out before you pack the car.
Get tonight's cloud-cover reading for your exact location β the single biggest factor in whether it's worth heading out.
What makes a good stargazing night?
Three things, in order of impact. Cloud coveris king β a perfectly dark sky is worthless under overcast, so we rate the average cloud across tonight's dark hours, not just the moment you look. The Moon comes next: a bright Moon up during the night washes out the Milky Way, meteors and faint stars, though bright planets and the brightest constellations shrug it off. And true darkness β at far-northern latitudes in summer the sky may never get properly dark at all, and we say so plainly rather than pretend. How dark your site is β light pollution β is the companion layer.
The darkest, best nights for faint sky are the week either side of a new Moon. Moon data computed from a low-precision lunar series.
