Reading the surf

Three numbers tell the story. Wave height(we use significant wave height β€” the average of the biggest third) is the headline: under 0.3Β m is flat, around 0.8–1.5Β m is fun for most surfers, and above 2.5Β m gets serious. Periodβ€” the seconds between waves β€” matters almost as much: a long-period swell (12Β s+) carries far more power and forms cleaner walls than short, choppy windswell of the same height. And swell directiontells you whether that energy is even aimed at your beach. The one honest caveat: this is the open-sea reading, so the actual breaking-wave size at a given breakdepends on the spot's shape and the tide β€” we band it plainly rather than pretend to forecast each peak.
