Tide Times

When is high tide today, and when does the water pull back? This layer gives you today's tide times and heights for the coast you care about — the difference between a swimmable beach and a mudflat, a navigable harbour and a grounded boat.

How the tide works

The tide is the slow breathing of the sea: the Moon's gravity (with a smaller pull from the Sun) drags a bulge of water around the planet as it spins, so most coasts get two highs and two lows roughly every 24 hours and 50 minutes — which is why high tide arrives about 50 minutes later each day. When the Sun and Moon line up at new and full Moon you get the biggest range, the spring tides; at the quarter Moons the range shrinks to the gentler neap tides. The actual times and heights at any one beach also depend on the shape of the coast, which is why a published prediction for a nearby gauge beats any rule of thumb.

81of these coasts carry real published hi/lo predictions from a nearby NOAA tide gauge; the rest show the live sea state and are honest that a tide table for that exact spot isn't in our source yet.
