What the number means
Sea-surface temperature is the warmth of the topmost layer of the ocean β the water you actually swim in. It swings with the seasons, lagging the air by a month or two because water is so slow to heat and cool, and it's nudged around by currents that carry warm or cold water along a coast. As a rough swim guide: below 15Β Β°C most people want a wetsuit, 19β23Β Β°C is comfortable for a swim, and above 27Β Β°C is bath-warm. Unusually warm seas also matter beyond comfort β sustained marine heat stresses coral and fuels stronger storms β so we band the reading honestly rather than just cheering a high number.
