A projection of how many new smartphones the world’s factories have built since midnight UTC, ticking at the most recent complete-year total — 1.24 billion phones shipped in 2024 — spread evenly across the year. That is a hard count from the industry’s own trackers: IDC, Canalys and Counterpoint each measured about 1.2 billion that year. It counts new phones only, not the growing second-hand market. Like the other counters here it is a yearly average made visible, not a live ledger.

This is an honest projection, not a census. It is computed by carrying a published figure forward at a known rate over real elapsed time — ≈ 39/sec (≈3.4m/day), from IDC — 1.24 billion smartphones shipped worldwide in 2024, spread evenly across the year.
