Who Celebrates New Year First โ and Last?
The fireworks in Sydney are old news by the time London counts down, and it's already tomorrow in Tokyo while it's still today in New York. So who actually gets to the new year first โ and how long does midnight take to travel all the way around the world?
New Year's Eve feels like a single global moment โ but it isn't one. Midnight is a local event, set by the clock, and the clock is different everywhere you go. So the new year doesn't arrive all at once. It sweeps across the planet from east to west, one time zone at a time, and it takes about 26 hours to make the whole crossing.

First into the new year: Kiribati
The first inhabited land to reach 1 January is Kiribati, a nation of islands straddling the equator in the central Pacific. Its easternmost islands โ the Line Islands, including Kiritimati (Christmas Island) โ sit at UTC+14, the most forward time zone in the world. When it's midnight there, it's still 10:00 the previous morning in London.
Kiribati didn't always hold this record. Until 1995 the date line cut straight through the country, so half of it was a full day ahead of the other half. Kiribati shifted the line eastward to put the whole nation on the same date โ and in doing so gave its Line Islands the earliest clocks on Earth.
New Zealand's Chatham Islands (UTC+13:45) and then mainland New Zealand (UTC+13 in the southern summer, because of daylight saving) follow soon after. By the time the famous fireworks go off in Sydney (UTC+11 in summer), the new year is already a couple of hours old in the Pacific.
Last to celebrate: American Samoa and Niue
At the other end, the last inhabited places to reach midnight are American Samoa and Niue, both at UTCโ11. Their midnight lands about 26 hours after Kiribati's โ so for more than a full day, it's simultaneously next year in one part of the Pacific and still last year in another.
The very last patch of Earth to enter the new year is one hour further back still: Baker Island and Howland Island at UTCโ12. But these are uninhabited US territories, so no one is there to count down.
The date-line paradox
Here's the strange part. Kiribati (first) and American Samoa (last) are only a few hundred kilometres apart across the central Pacific โ close enough that a fast boat could cross between them in a day. Yet their calendars read almost 26 hours apart.
The reason is the international date line, the imaginary boundary where the calendar day changes. It runs down the middle of the Pacific, roughly along 180ยฐ longitude but kinked to keep island nations on a single date. Kiribati sits just to the west of the line (the "ahead" side) and Samoa just to the east (the "behind" side). The Sun reaches them at nearly the same instant โ but their clocks call it different days.
Samoa itself switched sides at the end of 2011: to align its business week with Australia and New Zealand rather than the United States, it skipped 30 December 2011 entirely, jumping straight from the 29th to the 31st and moving from UTCโ11 to UTC+13.
Why it's a clock event, not a sky event
Most of what this Sky canvas tracks โ equinoxes, solstices, moon phases, eclipses โ is astronomical: fixed by the Sun, the Moon and Earth's orbit, happening at the same physical instant for the whole planet. New Year is different. There's nothing in the sky that marks 1 January; the date is a human convention, and midnight is defined by whichever time zone you happen to keep.

It's a close cousin of the real day/night terminator โ both sweep west across the globe โ but the terminator follows where the Sun actually is, while the New Year line follows where the clocks say midnight.
