WEATHER Β· LOW CLOUD
Low Cloud
Low cloud only β the stratus, stratocumulus and fog below ~6,500 ft, the deck that greys out a day and grounds aircraft with low ceilings. The cloud deck that most sets what the sky looks like from the ground.
What it shows
Low cloud is the deck below about 6,500 ft β stratus, stratocumulus and fog. This layer shows only that bottom band, the cloud that most decides what the sky actually looks like from the ground.
How to read it
Bright zones are where a grey lid of low cloud is sitting over the surface β dull overcast days, coastal stratus, valley fog and the low ceilings that ground light aircraft. Because it is the deck you actually stand under, low cloud is the best guide to whether it simply looks grey out, even when higher decks are broken.
