WEATHER Β· MID CLOUD

Mid Cloud

Mid-level cloud only β€” the altocumulus and altostratus decks roughly 6,500-20,000 ft up, the grey sheets that thicken and lower as a storm moves in. The cloud deck split out from total cover.

What it shows

Mid-level cloud sits roughly 6,500 to 20,000 ft up β€” the altocumulus and altostratus decks. This layer isolates that middle band from the low and high decks, so you can read it on its own.

How to read it

These are the grey water-and-ice sheets that thicken and lower as a weather system approaches. When a thin, luminous altostratus veil sinks and darkens into a solid mid-level deck, rain from an approaching front is usually not far behind.
