WEATHER Β· WIND GUSTS

Wind Gusts

Peak wind gusts β€” the strongest momentary blasts, not the steady average; the field that downs trees, grounds flights and fans wildfire.

What it shows

Wind gusts are the strongest momentary blasts of wind, not the steady average β€” the peaks that snap branches, ground aircraft and drive wildfire. Forecasters treat gusts as a separate, sharper hazard from mean wind speed.

How to read it

Calm and light wind stay near-transparent so the map shows through; colour builds only where the wind has real punch β€” muted blue-green for a breeze, through green and yellow-green, into amber and deep red for violent, damaging gusts. The strongest reds cluster around deep low-pressure storms, mountain gaps and squall lines. The animated Wind layer shows direction β€” this one shows raw strength.
