What it shows
Pressure shows mean sea-level pressure — the weight of the atmosphere, adjusted to sea level so highs and lows can be compared everywhere. It is the map forecasters read first.
How to read it
Lows are the storm factories — air rises, cloud and rain form; highs bring sinking air, settled and often clear. The tighter the pressure changes across a distance, the stronger the wind.
