Honest projection · estimated
People Undernourished (est.)
The number of people in the world who do not get enough food energy for a healthy life — about 673 million, roughly one in eleven. This is a standing figure, not a running tick: the UN publishes it once a year as a point estimate (the 2024 range was 638 to 720 million), so the counter shows the honest headline number and does not pretend to count hunger second by second. It is the world figure behind the per-country undernourishment map, which is one tap away in Atlas.
About this number
This is an honest projection, not a census. It is computed by carrying a published figure forward at a known rate over real elapsed time — ≈ 673 million people · FAO point estimate, 2024, from FAO — State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025 — 673 million people undernourished in 2024 (point estimate; range 638-720 million). The source is FAO — State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025. The true value is known only to within a margin; this is the running estimate, and we label it as one.
